Morningstar Fund Awards (Hong Kong) 2010 has come to a successful end
Editorial & Research Team, Morningstar Asia Ltd. 2011-03-16

The result of Fund Awards (Hong Kong) 2010 has been announced on 16 March 2011. There are total of 12 awards to recognize the outstanding funds in 2010, eight to equity funds and four awards to fixed income portfolios.

To echo the enhancement of the Morningstar category system took place in October 2010, as well as to gratify the distinctive investment sentiments of Asian investors, the inaugural Asia ex-Japan Award is simultaneously introduced to this year’s event. We believe this can promote a better comparison of funds among similar peers.

Looking back at 2010, the markets were good to mutual funds, as most managers continued to recoup the losses they incurred between 2007 and early 2009. Growth styles outperformed value, whilst small-cap stocks generally outpaced large-cap names.

The winning funds have passed our stringent qualitative and quantitative selection criteria, which we’ve developed to help identify funds that put investors first. Fund performance in the past year is not the only selection criteria for the Morningstar Hong Kong Fund Awards. In addition to one-year performance, Morningstar also evaluates each fund’s risk-adjusted returns over a longer period. Morningstar looks for managers who outperformed in 2010 on the heels of much lengthier successes, and measures this success by observing trailing performance along with an emphasis on the fund’s ability to protect investors from downside risks over time.

Moreover, the stability of the fund’s management team and the consistency of investment strategy are also essential factors. Above all, fund managers should be dedicated to investors.

Lastly, we would like to congratulate and commend the winners of the Fund Awards (Hong Kong) 2010 for their exceptional performance to clinch these accolades. As we observed, the common formula for this year’s winners is well-tenured managers consistently applying a highly disciplined investment process that clearly withstood the trial of time.
